In a lot of ways, it is fitting that Nicky Winmar is the only St Kilda player to claim AFL Mark of the Year. On the other, it is more than a little surprising. Not that he is the only Saint, but that he himself only won the award once.
That aside, his mark to claim the award in 1992 was a spectacular effort. Without question a moment of pure footballing beauty, Winmar gracefully stalked Kieran Sporn’s long bomb inside Essendon’s forward 50. Then before an unsuspecting Todd Ridley knew what happened, he had effortlessly flown high over him to haul the ball in.
