AFLW 2020: Team of the Week Round Three

It was a week of firsts in the AFLW for the Saints, following on from the club’s first win on Friday, the club received its first AFLW Team of the Week selections on Tuesday. The duo selected were Caitlin Greiser and Rhiannon Watt who starred in the victory at opposite ends of the ground.

A dominant force up forward, Greiser was instrumental in the Saints victory. The 20 year-old kicked two of the teams three goals and assisted in the other scored by Darcy Gutteridge. Her long-range effort in the fourth quarter will no doubt ensure her place in St Kilda folklore, with it snatching the lead for the team.

The moment Caitlin Greiser wrote her name into St Kilda Football Club history forever.

While Greiser was ruling the forward fifty for the Saints, Rhiannon Watt was proving a rock at the other end. The St Kilda co-captain made a number of timely interventions across the night to break up promising Melbourne attacking raids. This isn’t where her influence began and ended though. Around the ground, she collected 14 possessions and won 16 hit outs.

Further recognition.

The lifelong Saints fan’s efforts were rewarded with the opportunity to lead the club in an extremely enthusiastic rendition of the club song in the middle of the ground post-match. Speaking to saints.com.au post-match she expressed the significance of the moment to her. “I’ve been singing that song since I was a kid, and to be able to do it here at Moorabbin in front of so many people… mind-blowing, absolutely unreal,” she explained.

For Greiser, another reward for her performance came on Monday with her nomination for the AFLW Rising Star Award. The second Saint in three weeks to be nominated for the award, she also moved within one goal of the AFLW goalkicking award.
